FIGHT & FLIGHT

Fight and Flight are an acoustic guitar duet, formed when James Douglas and Lawrence Reed met whilst studying for a Masters in Composition in Bath Spa University.

Despite being a generation apart, they instantly discovered a shared love of acoustic guitar, particularly the exponents Nick Drake, Bert Jansch, Richard Thompson and John Martyn. They approach playing and composing through very different directions, with Lawrence honing his skills in the heyday of the 1970s London folk club circuit and James being drawn to the guitar as a teenager in the 90s.

Their original instrumental compositions draw on many diverse influences including folk, jazz and classical and make full use of cross rhythms, interwoven finger patterns, percussive and harmonic techniques.

The result is beautiful acoustic guitar music with a contemporary feel but with its roots based in two very different backgrounds.

Fight & Flight have joined forces with The Flamenco Thief to record two new guitar trios. The usual tight melodic framework is accentuated by cross rhythms and the combination of three very different styles of playing. Recorded in a live environment the sound is fresh and vibrant.
